Café Mercy is the latest addition the the iconic Grey Street in Newcastle Upon Tyne. It is the sister of Mother Mercy, an underground cocktail bar voted in the top 50 cocktail bars in the UK. Café Mercy offers a menu full of signature cocktails, as well as some new additions. Ellis Signs were excited to be a part of this project as we have worked together in the past digitally printing vinyl graphics for Mother Mercy (below).
Design
Our designers followed the brief given by Café Mercy which was to mix in a Mediterranean vibe with their current branding. The white buildings synonymous with the Mediterranean were a key factor in drawing inspiration for the signage. Once the design was signed off, we could begin the manufacturing process. The first step in the process was finalizing the design. We opted for a sleek, modern font that resonated with Cafe Mercy’s brand identity. Once the design was approved, we moved on to selecting materials.
For the letters, we chose durable aluminium for its lightweight properties and resistance to the elements. The inner parts of the letters were fitted with energy-efficient LED lighting, ensuring that the sign would shine bright whilst being eco-friendly. The halo effect was achieved by leaving a gap between the wall and the letters, allowing the light to spill out and create a soft, inviting glow.
Manufacture
There are a few different manufacturing methods which went into fabricating this sign. The sign includes white powder coated built up aluminium letters and halo illumination created using warm white LEDs. The sign ties in perfectly with the chic and trendy vibe of Grey Street, whilst mixing in a taste of the Mediterranean.
With designs and materials in place, it was time for manufacturing. Our skilled team utilized precision CNC machining to cut the letters with exactness. Each letter was carefully crafted to ensure uniformity in size and shape.
Once the letters were cut, we applied a high-quality finish. For Cafe Mercy, we chose a matte white powder coating that provided a striking contrast against the halo illumination. After finishing the letters, we installed the LED components and conducted thorough testing to ensure everything was functioning perfectly.
Install
Café Mercy is located on Grey Street in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Our fitting team made sure they followed all necessary health and safety procedures to be able to work here.
Our team arrived early at Cafe Mercy to ensure everything was set for the big reveal. We worked meticulously to install the letters at the desired height and alignment. Once everything was in place, we connected the electrical components and powered on the sign. As the halo effect illuminated the letters, the transformation was breathtaking. The soft glow created an inviting ambiance that perfectly complemented the café’s vibe.
The finished product looks incredible thanks to the unique design and bespoke manufacturing processes used to make this sign.
Café Mercy: THE COMPLETED SIGN
The final product was nothing short of spectacular. The built-up halo illuminated letters not only enhanced the café’s exterior but also drew in passersby, making Cafe Mercy a must-visit destination in Newcastle. The owners were thrilled with the outcome, and the feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive.
